Meet Gideon.

Gideon was brought into the shelter in a bad state: wet, cold, suffering from a severe upper respiratory infection and covered in burrs. He was fading quickly from the cold, but after an hour of performing fading kitten protocol on him (raising his body temperature and blood sugar) he was stable enough for transport to the emergency vet. It was also discovered that his tongue had major ulceration, most likely due to calicivirus, and that he was suffering from anemia from a major flea infestation.

At the emergency vet he was immediately put on oxygen, IV fluids and medication, and given heat support in addition to being syringe-fed. By the next day he was brighter and more alert, although still unwilling to eat due to his severely injured tongue. With five days of round-the-clock care, it wasn’t long before he turned the corner entirely and could be discharged to foster care.

After nearly a month of recovery, Gideon was able to be neutered and go to his forever home.

Gideon was featured on We Are Austin’s “Wednesday Friendsday” segment, and you can watch it here!

His final total bill was $2,412.98.
